Health Professions Grant Awards for Health Professions Students - 2013
PURPOSE: The Health Professions Grant Awards Program is designed for undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in careers in public health. The money can be used to conduct events, projects and/or research studies in Illinois.
CRITERIA: A project may address issues related to the planning and execution of local events and projects. The project can include data collection and analysis; investigating attitudes, opinions and behaviors related to health; health education activities; or organizing health career exploration events. Priority will be given to projects conducted in underserved areas or with people residing in HPSAs and medically underserved areas.
Students who receive an award will be required to prepare a PowerPoint presentation upon conclusion of the project. Additionally, each participant will prepare an evaluation report and a budget reconciliation.
Selection will be determined by a review committee comprised of faculty and staff of the Illinois AHEC Network Program, the National Center for Rural Health Professions, UIC College of Medicine/Rockford, the Urban Medicine Program, UIC College of Medicine/Chicago and the UIC School of Public Health.
ELIGIBILITY: All undergraduate students are encouraged to apply. Students are required to work with a faculty or community advisor. This project can be used as course work with permission of the course instructor.
BUDGET: Awards will range from $100 to $500.
Money from the project grant can be used for:
a. Creating posters and handouts; copying materials; duplicating surveys; and creating presentations;
b. Paying for postage, return envelope fees;
c. Purchasing mailing lists, fees for using copyrighted materials;
d. Purchasing door prizes, refreshments and other materials for an event;
e. Traveling to a meeting or to the location of the funded activity
The following costs are NOT covered:
a Compensation for the student’s time
b. Compensation for consultants
c. Computer hardware
TIMELINE: This is a rolling application process. Applications will be reviewed as received with timely decisions. The review process will begin on February 15, 2013. While the time period for the project is variable (up to 5 months), the funding is to be distributed starting February 1, 2012. Final reports will be due no later than August 1, 2013.
